The Best Tour Guides of Cairo: A Personal Recommendation

Rami – Rami’s Insight Tours

Let me start with Rami. Honestly, I cannot sing Rami’s praises loud enough. He truly was my knight in shining armour. I don’t think I have ever met a guide as passionate about their trade and their country as Rami. He doesn’t care whether you are his customer or not, all he cares about is that every visitor coming to Egypt has a fantastic time, and he goes above and beyond to make sure any preconceived ideas visitors might have of Egypt are shattered.

I found him thanks to my Instagram friend Emma, who had travelled with him to Cairo a few months earlier. After seeing her review, I reached out to him to book a single day’s activity with him: the Saqqara and Dahshur day trip.

Despite only having my final day booked with him, he called me the day I was due to leave for Egypt to make sure I knew how to navigate the airport, to ensure I had a transfer booked and to share his knowledge on how to make the most of Cairo. Basically, he shared his essential tips for visiting Cairo for first time visitors.

My knight in shining armour

Rami to the rescue

Unfortunately I had a very unfortunate encounter with an inappropriate transfer driver upon arriving in Cairo. It shook me up a fair bit, and I shared what had happened on social media, because I always promise to be honest about my experiences. If you are intrigued, you can read it here.

When Rami saw my story about the transfer incident, he called me to make sure I was safe and OK even though it was gone 1 am in the morning. He then mobilised his sister to come and get me so that I could stay in a safe female environment with his family. They welcomed me with open arms and completely transformed my experience.

Home away from home

I stayed in their guest house, the Pyramids Temple Guest House, for the rest of my stay, and made me feel at home. I ate most meals with them as a family, sitting cross-legged on the floor the Bedouin way, and eating with my hands while using a nan-like bread as a spoon. These are the travel experiences I live for!

I helped his nieces with their English homework and learned how to cook traditional Egyptian dishes thanks to his mum. She spoke no English, and seemed oblivious to the fact that I spoke no Arabic as she chatted away to me as if I knew what she was saying. I might not have understood the words, but I definitely understood the sentiment. Her big toothless grin, kind eyes and the placement of her hand on my arm told me all I needed to know.

I didn’t spend that much time with Rami as he was away with another group, but the way he jumped to my rescue, and the amount of genuine care he showed for me while I was in Egypt has never been matched elsewhere.

Saqqara and Dahshur

I did however to one tour with him, and it was during this tour that I learned that not only he is a nice person, but he is an amazing tour guide. I struggle to believe there would be a better tour guide in Cairo!

Not only is he engaging and full of valuable information and stories, but he knows how to get behind the scenes access. Saqqara is still an active dig site, and therefore there are many areas that are not open to the public. Or at least not to the general public. Rami knows what hands to grease to get exclusive access, and as such, I found myself holding the keys to the Tomb of Irukaptah. I’m sure we have all fantasised about unlocking secret tours. With Rami, you actually get the chance to do that!

Honestly, Rami transformed my experience in Cairo on so many levels. I cannot recommend him highly enough! Not only do I think he is the best tour guide in Cairo, but he’s probably one of the best guides I’ve come across anywhere. Malaki in Tanzania and Bassi in Sierra Leone are probably the only ones that could rival him!

You can find all of Rami’s details on his website, Rami’s Insight Tours, and you can also reach him on WhatsApp at +201119239280.

Rania – why it’s important to support female tour guides

Rania is Rami’s sister, and the one that rescued me from my first guest house. I got to spend a couple of days exploring Cairo with her which I thoroughly enjoyed as it gave me an insider’s view into a part of Egyptian society that I may not have otherwise accessed: a women’s perspective! From understanding the roles of women in ancient history to sharing the modern realities of everyday life in Egypt, Rania brought a fresh and holistic perspective to my time in Cairo.

I’m also a big believer in supporting female guides because it means you are directly supporting women in an industry traditionally dominated by men. Egypt is seeing more women enter the tourism field, and it comes down to us to book with them to help break down barriers and empower local women to thrive in their careers.

Spending a couple of days with Rania also added an extra layer of comfort following my not so nice encounter with my male transfer driver. I felt spending time with someone who truly understands the experience I’d been through was much more reassuring than had I perhaps ended up immediately with a male tour guide.

And as someone who loves deep conversations, Rania also provided me with a platform for discussions about gender, society and life in Egypt. I certainly found myself forming a connection beyond the typical guide-guest relationship, and gained a great deal of extra insights!

So when you book with Rami’s Insight Tours, make sure you also spend time with Rania!

Lovely Rania

Khaled – the best non-tour guide I have ever met!

Another gem of a person. I met Khaled on a Facebook group and after a chat on the phone decided he sounded friendly enough and therefore agreed to meet with him. Like Rami, he also saw my story on Instagram following my encounter with the inappropriate driver and also got in touch in the early hours of the morning to make sure I was OK.

Khaled works as an engineer and loves languages and culture, and therefore loves meeting travellers so that not only he can show them his culture, but so he can learn about theirs. He wants to create a “hang out with a friend” experience for tourists so they can eat local food, explore local neighbourhoods and see for themselves what Egypt is really like.

I really enjoyed hanging out with Khaled; he was game for my interrogation and gave me a really good chance to understand Egyptian culture from someone who is not really that dissimilar to me (university-educated, middle-class upbringing, in his 30s). We spoke about gender roles, gender equality, religion, homosexuality, visa privileges (or lack thereof), dating, politics, economics, arranged marriages, sex before marriage (or lack thereof) and how Western movies give the completely wrong impression of Westerners. I found it fascinating and thought-provoking.

One of the ways to dive headfirst into a new culture is by using public transport, but this can be rather daunting, but with Khaled metaphorically holding my hand, I was able to explore many of Cairo’s public transport systems, giving me a pretty good idea of how best to get around Cairo on my own!

If you like authentic experiences, then you need to get in touch with Khaled, he is an absolute gem and someone I am now happy to call a friend.

Khaled – If you like authentic travel, he’s your man!

Ayman – never has there been a more enthusiastic tour guide

Ayman was my tour guide in Alexandria. I booked the tour through Get Your Guide and ended up on a private tour with Ayman, a bubbly 62 year old that spreads love and joy everywhere he goes. He didn’t pass a single person, man or woman, whom he didn’t greet, kiss, shake hands with, and say Habibi too. Habibi means “my love”.

As soon as people saw him, their faces spread into a big wide grin, and I could understand why; he had a special energy about him.

On top of being a really lovely human, he was also very informative, full of information and had some jokes up his sleeve too.

If you book through Get Your Guide, you are not guaranteed to get him, so you can always contact him directly on WhatsApp – +201229221792

How to find reliable tour guides in Cairo

Finding a reliable tour guide in Cairo can transform your experience from simply sightseeing to truly understanding the city’s culture and history. If you want to do your own research and find your own tour guides in Cairo, then here are some key tips on what to look for and what to avoid when choosing the right guide.

What to look for in a guide

Local knowledge and understanding

Look for guides who not only know the history but also understand the nuances of Egyptian culture and customs. A great guide will enrich your experience with stories, insights, and lesser-known facts that go beyond guidebook information.

Language skills

Tours can become incredibly challenging when the guide doesn’t have a good grasp of your preferred language, in this case, English. Their ability to explain will be limited, and in some cases, understanding them will be particularly difficult. I remember doing a tour in Beijing once with a lovely lady who I could not understand at all. It was one of the most painful tours I’ve been on.

Khaled’s English was exceptionally good which is why it was so easy to have deep conversations

Positive reviews and recommendations

Check reviews on trusted travel sites such as Tripadvisor or Google, or use social media platforms to see recent feedback. Work of mouth can also be powerful too, so don’t hesitate to ask friends, fellow travellers or bloggers for recommendations.

When reading reviews on Tripadvisor or Google, don’t dismiss a company because of one or two bad reviews. Read a cross-section of them to get an overall picture, and if in doubt, ask the company about the bad review. You might be surprised by what they reply with!

Migration Tanzania Safari got a bad review recently due to an error on a booking. When asked about it they fully admitted the error and shared the steps they have put in place to correct it and to ensure it doesn’t happen again. That speak volumes to me and reassures me it is a company I’d be happy to travel with.

On the other hand, be wary of too many positive reviews. In Vietnam, and most recently in Dubai, I was asked to leave a review with the guide watching over my shoulder. In Vietnam, I was actually harassed after leaving a 3* review until I conceded and changed it to 5* for my own safety! So don’t just take the star rating as an indication. Do take time to read what people have to say!

Transparency with itineraries and prices

A reputable guide should provide and outline costs upfront, without hidden fees. Make sure the tour includes all agreed-upon stops and experiences, and double-check if any extras are not covered.

Accreditation and professionalism

Tour guides in Cairo should be accredited by the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism, which ensures they have a solid grounding in Egyptian history and culture.

Red flags to avoid

Pressure Tactics

Be wary of guides who push you to buy items at shops or who receive a commission for “recommended” stops. This can detract from an authentic experience and lead to inflated costs.

This doesn’t mean that a tour guide receiving commission is a bad thing. Most people who recommend anything in life receive something in exchange. That in itself is not a bad thing. What you want to avoid it people focusing so much on the commission that they forget to put the customers needs first.

Unrealistic claims

If a guide promises exclusive access to areas or activities that seem too good to be true, proceed with caution. Some less-reputable guides might exaggerate their capabilities or access. Lots of people offer this, but few deliver! Luckily, Rami does!

Vague or missing credentials

Reliable guides will usually be transparent about their background, experience, and any relevant certifications. If a guide is evasive about their qualifications or work history, it might be best to look elsewhere.

Poor communication

A good guide should be able to clearly communicate tour details, pricing, and expectations in advance. If you struggle to get clear answers before booking, this could signal similar issues during the tour itself.

Resources for finding reliable tour guides in Cairo

Travel platforms

Websites like Viator and GetYourGuide offer tours with vetted guides and provide user reviews to help with your decision.

Local tour companies

Many small tour operators based in Cairo have built strong reputations for quality and service. Rami is one of them! Look for those that have been in business for a while and offer themed or customisable tours.

Social media and travel blogs

Check out Instagram and Facebook fore recommendations from travellers. Facebook Groups are also a great place to ask for advice. In fact, it was in a Facebook Group that I met Khaled!

Blogs are also a great source as these often feature updated and personal insights on trusted guides.

Final thoughts on finding the best tour guides in Cairo

Choosing the right tour guide in Cairo can transform your trip from an ordinary itinerary into a memorable, immersive experience. A good guide doesn’t just lead you through the sights but brings the city to life, adding depth and personal insights that you won’t find in a guidebook.

To get the most out of your tour guide while in Cairo, don’t hesitate to ask for local recommendations. They will know the best-kept secrets – whether it’s a favourite street staff, an unassuming local café, or a hidden viewpoint for sunset over the city.

A well-connected guide can introduce you to local artisans, recommend cultural events, or point you towards fascinating areas that reveal Cairo’s diversity and history in a unique way. Even better, they might even join you!

Be curious

The biggest tip I can give you for a truly enriching experience is to be curious and open about Cairo’s culture. Ask questions about daily life, family customs, religious practices, and recent developments in the city. That is why I loved spending time with Khaled so much. He was able to provide his own perspective and insights to help me appreciate the complexities and rhythms of life in Cairo.

Ultimately, choosing the right guide is about finding someone who matches your interests, curiosity, and preferred travel style. With the right person leading the way, Cairo will become more than just a series of landmarks; it will be an experience that stays with you long after you visit.

If you do reach out to Rami, Rania, Khaled or Ayman, please make sure to say hi from me!
