It is tough to choose just one! In terms of wildlife, witnessing the Great Migration thunder across the Mara River is unforgettable. I’ve been lucky enough to see it three times, and each time, it takes my breath away.
But it’s always the people who truly make my journeys special. One memory that always brings a smile is meeting Hassan, a fisherman at Lake Manyara. He offered to take me out on his dugout canoe, and as we drifted across the lake, trying to communicate in my broken Swahili and his non-existent English, he said “teach me song!”. All I could think of is “If you are happy and you know it clap your hands”. And that is how I found myself singing and clapping my hands in the middle of Lake Manyara.
When the tour ended and I tried to pay him, he simply smiled, declined, and as he walked away started singing our song, with a little skip and a hop. Moments like this remind me why I travel – to connect, learn, and share joy in the simplest of ways.
