When it comes to wildlife, you can’t beat Tanzania

Home to the largest number of animals in Africa. It is estimated that over 4 million wild animals roam the lands and graze the plains of this diverse country, and this tour promises to take you right into the thick of it!

Every year, millions of wildebeest migrate through the endless plains of the Serengeti, one of nature’s most remarkable events. In September, the wildebeest should be returning from Kenya, taking their lives in the “hoofs” and crossing the croc-infested Mara River.

Our 9 day Tanzania safari will take us deep into Northern Serengeti in search of the large herds of wildebeest. Along the way, we will explore Northern Tanzania’s highlights, including the Baobab-dotted landscape of Tarangire, the endless plains of the Serengeti, home to the largest population of lions, and the wildlife haven that is Ngorongoro Crater. But we won’t stop at the highlights; we will also get off the beaten path, exploring the lesser-known areas of Northern Tanzania. We will sleep under the watchful eye of Ol Donyo Lengai and walk the alkaline shores of Lake Natron in search of the oldest known human footprint!

overview

More than just wildlife...

We will enrich our journey by immersing ourselves in local culture. The trip will start by spending a night with a Maasai Tribe, sleeping in a traditional hut overlooking Mount Kilimanjaro. We will also step back in time when we meet one of the only remaining true hunter-gatherer tribes in Tanzania, the Hadzabe, and we will also learn how to sculpt scrap metal with the Datoga tribe. However, immersive cultural experiences go much further than learning about traditional tribes. We will dig deep to understand modern local culture too, and there is no better way to do this than by breaking bread with locals at traditional Tanzanian BBQ joints!

We will complete this once in a lifetime experience by connecting with the PAMS Foundation, who will share with us how they manage human-wildlife conflict. The aim of this trip is for you to leave with a deep understanding of everything that gels together to make Tanzania such a fascinating country.

I just have one word of caution… you won’t want to leave!

Day 1: Welcome to Tanzania

We will start our day by watching the sunrise over Mount Kilimanjaro. After waving goodbye to our Maasai hosts, we will make our way to Tarangire National Park, also known as Elephant Paradise—it’s a must-visit for anyone dreaming of encountering wild elephants in their natural habitat.

Tarangire offers the perfect opportunity to witness these majestic giants up close, and although you’ll see a variety of other wildlife, elephants remain the undeniable stars of the show.

During the dry season, the life-giving Tarangire River acts as the sole water source, drawing vast herds of animals to its banks. It’s a spectacle of nature that promises unrivalled wildlife viewing opportunities.

The landscape itself is equally captivating, with its signature baobab trees adding an exotic charm to the scenery. These towering, ancient giants provide a unique backdrop to your safari adventure, making Tarangire a truly one-of-a-kind destination.

At the end of the day, we will make our way to the town of Karatu, where we will stay at the charming Eileen’s Trees Lodge.

Accommodation: Eileen’s Trees Lodge

Meals Included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 2: Elephant Paradise

Step into the shoes of local farmers as we traverse the scenic trails of the beehive fence. This immersive hike offers you the unique opportunity to witness firsthand the innovative solutions employed to foster peaceful coexistence with wildlife. Along the way, you’ll meet the welcoming local community and see how these practices are implemented in harmony with nature.

Our adventure continues with a visit to the inspiring NARI Women Beekeepers, a dynamic group of 36 women revolutionising community conservation efforts. Here, you’ll participate in hands-on activities such as honey processing and wax candle making. Additionally, you’ll support their permaculture initiatives, gaining appreciation for their dedication to sustainable living.

Spending the day with the PAMS team grants you an exclusive glimpse into the rich tapestry of local life, an experience few visitors have the privilege to enjoy. This is more than a tour; it’s an invitation to understand and contribute to the preservation of Tanzania’s natural splendour. We will return back to Eileen’s Trees Lodge tonight with enough time for you to relax by the pool before we set off deep into the wilderness the next morning.

Meals Included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 3: Walking with Elephants

Prepare to awaken your spirit of adventure as we set out early today for a breathtaking exploration of Ngorongoro Crater National Park—unquestionably the crown jewel of Tanzania’s natural wonders. Formed from the remnants of a majestic volcano once towering above even Mount Kilimanjaro, this expansive caldera now stands as the largest intact caldera in the world, teeming with extraordinary beauty and wildlife.

A Wildlife Wonderland
Nestled within its 100-square-mile expanse is an ecosystem bustling with life, home to over 25,000 large mammals. Among these, you will find the endangered black rhino, one of the hardest animals to spot in the wild.

At the heart of the caldera, you will discover the alkaline lake, its waters adorned with the vivid pink hues of flamingo flocks elegantly feeding along the shore. The scene is complemented by the sight of hippos languidly submerged in the cool waters, a tranquil counterpoint to the energetic hustle and bustle around them.
Journey to the Serengeti
After a hot picnic, our adventure continues to the endless plains of the Serengeti. We will arrive in time for an evening drive, where the golden hues of the setting sun cast a magical glow over the landscape.

Accommodation: Tukaone Tented Camp

Meals Included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 4: Discover the Wonders of Ngorongoro Crater National Park

In the Maasai language, “Serengeti” translates to “endless plains,” and it’s an apt description of this vast expanse. Here lies one of the last remaining savannas, a pristine habitat teeming with life and one of earth’s oldest ecosystems.
For many, the Serengeti is synonymous with the great wildebeest migration—a spectacle that draws nature lovers from around the globe. However, the Central Serengeti holds a treasure trove of wildlife experiences beyond the migration. Central Serengeti is recognised as Africa’s premier national park for lion sightings.

Our day begins at first light when the park is bathed in the serene quietude of dawn. This is the magic hour for wildlife enthusiasts, as lions are at their most active, prowling the plains in search of prey, before they find shade to chill for the rest of the day.

But lions are just the beginning. The Serengeti is a living tapestry of wildlife, where leopards stealthily stalk through the tall grasses, cheetahs flash across the landscape in pursuit of their next meal, and towering giraffes cast long shadows as they gracefully traverse the terrain. Keep your eyes peeled for the mesmerising stripes of zebras, the graceful leap of gazelles, and the mighty presence of buffalo herds. In the afternoon, our adventure continues northward, following the pulse of the Wildebeest Migration as it makes its epic trek back from Kenya. This is nature’s grand theatre, a testament to the resilience and instinct of thousands of animals on their relentless quest for survival.

Accommodation: Kati Kati Tented Camp or Sero Tented Camp

Meals Included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 5: Explore the Untamed Wilds of the Serengeti

Today we will set out to witness the spectacular wildebeest migration—the greatest animal migration on earth! It is a day that requires patience, and where the crossing is not guaranteed, but just imagine the thrill of possibly seeing these majestic creatures make their daring crossing over the Mara River, a moment many only dream of experiencing.

We will give ourselves all day to see the crossing. How the day develops will depend on what the wildebeests decide to do, but one thing we can guarantee is plenty of anticipation!

We will return back to the same camp for the night and have another chance to sit around the fire and compare tales with other safari goers.

Accommodation: Kati Kati Tented Camp or Sero Tented Camp

Meals Included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 6: A National Geographic Experience

It is time to venture off the beaten path. Our day kicks off with a final morning game drive in Serengeti, and a final chance to see the Mara crossing if we did not get lucky yesterday!

By mid-morning, we’ll set our sights on Lake Natron. En route, we’ll break for lunch at a local eatery, where you’ll savour the flavours of a traditional Tanzanian BBQ—far from the tourist crowds, offering an authentic taste of local culture.

Upon arrival in the early afternoon, the adventure continues with an optional hike to a nearby waterfall. This isn’t your average stroll; it involves wading through the river, making for a refreshing and stimulating experience that promises to stretch your legs and awaken your senses.

As evening falls, we’ll gather to marvel at the awe-inspiring Ol Donyo Lengai volcano, its majestic silhouette casting a spellbinding view against the twilight. With a drink in hand, you’ll find the perfect ending to a day filled with exploration and discovery.
Although our accommodation is basic tonight, we could not ask for better views!

Accommodation: African Safari Lodges Lake Natron

Meals Included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 7: Explore the Untouched Wonders of Lake Natron

We rise with the sun for an unforgettable excursion to the shores of Lake Natron. Nestled under the watchful gaze of the majestic Ol Donyo Lengai volcano, this day promises a blend of awe-inspiring nature and a deep cultural connection.
We will begin with a walking safari around the lake—a rare opportunity to witness thousands of flamingoes in their natural habitat, creating a mesmerising kaleidoscope of pink against the shimmering waters. It’s a spectacle that truly captures the soul of nature, offering a serene experience for bird enthusiasts and photographers alike.

But the wonders don’t stop there. Our exploration will guide us to the ancient footprints of our ancestors, preserved in time by the cooling lava of a long-ago volcanic eruption. This extraordinary site offers you a tangible link to the past as you walk in the very footsteps of those who came before us.

And what better way to conclude this remarkable morning than by indulging in a delightful bush breakfast? Surrounded by the untamed beauty of the landscape, you’ll savour the flavours of the wilderness, a fitting finale to our morning’s exploration before we reluctantly return to civilisation.

Our journey continues through some of Tanzania’s most beautiful landscapes—traversing the breathtaking Ngorongoro Highlands—as we make our way back to Karatu. Arriving by mid-afternoon, you’ll have the perfect opportunity to unwind and soak in the memories of the day before gathering for a farewell dinner.

Accommodation: Eileen’s Trees Lodge

Meals Included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 8: Flamingoes and Historical footprints

Adventure awaits as we prepare for an unforgettable experience before you depart. Today, you’ll step back in time and immerse yourself in the rich traditions of the Hadzabe Tribe. Living harmoniously with nature, the Hadzabe thrive much like our ancestors did, relying on the land’s bounty. The women gather while the men hunt, embodying a lifestyle that has been untouched by modernity.

You will join them in their daily routines—watching them play by the rules of the natural ecosystem. Donning the skins of past hunts, they consume only what they can catch with their hand-crafted spears. It’s a rare chance to witness a society that has not engineered systems for advantage but instead lives in balance with nature. Engaging with the Hadzabe is not merely an encounter; it’s an opportunity to learn from a way of life that is both ancient and profound.

But the adventure doesn’t stop there. You’ll also meet the Datoga tribe, renowned for their pastoral lifestyle and vibrant culture. Their resilience and adaptability in the face of nature’s challenges offer further insights into the diverse ways human societies have thrived over millennia.

This unique day promises not just memories captured on camera but a profound connection to the roots of humanity. As we travel back to the airport for your onward flight, you’ll carry with you the spirit of Africa etched in your heart and soul.

Meals Included: Breakfast and lunch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most visitors to Tanzania require a VISA. It is possible for most nationalities to get a VISA upon arrival. However, it is also possible to get an eVISA online. Please check the Tanzania Immigration website to check what rules apply to your nationality.
If you opt for the eVISA, please note the system is notorious for failing. It is possible that you don’t get a confirmation number, or that your eVISA doesn’t come through in time. If this happens, hakuna matata (no worries). You will be able to resolve this by joining the VISA on arrival queue. If payment has been taken for your VISA but you have not received it, please make sure you bring proof of payment.
Getting a VISA on arrival is easy. You will need to fill out a landing card, which you will take to the VISA counter queue. Border control will check it for you and stamp you in. You then go to the payment counter to pay your $50, and so long as there are no issues, you are in!
Wait times can vary from 5 minutes to 40 minutes depending on what other flights have landed and the number of other passengers there are.
Please check the Official Tanzania Immigration website for information relevant to your nationality.

The tour starts and ends at Kilimanjaro International Airport. If you wish to extend your trip, we can also arrange to pick you up or drop you off in Arusha. Please talk to us to arrange this.

There are a number of flight options depending on where you are coming from. Skyscanner or Google Flights is the best bet for working out the best route. We are more than happy to offer guidance and support in finding the best flights for you, but please note that, ultimately, we would not be responsible for your flight connection.
You may also want to consider flying into Nairobi, Kenya. Nairobi has much better connections with direct flights from London, New York and other major cities. From Nairobi, you can take a shuttle bus (we recommend Riverside Shuttle) to Arusha. Of course, this involves a lot more adventure, but if time allows, it is worth the effort and will generally save you money too.

I always recommend reading your government’s advice before travelling to a country, as these highlight potential hazards their citizens might experience. For example, British citizens should read the advice of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.
Tanzania is considered a safe country, with most problems occurring in large cities, which we will not be visiting during this trip. Safaris are considered some of the safest activities to do in Tanzania.

The Serengeti National Park has over 2 million ungulates (hoofed animals), 4,000 lions, 1,000 leopards, 550 cheetahs, and 500 bird species! Add to those a further 364 species, and we can guarantee you will see a lot of animals! We just can't guarantee which!
When you arrive, you will be provided with an “I Spy” book so that you can tick off all the animal species you see during your safari adventure!

We use specialised long-wheelbase safari Landcruisers for all of our Tanzania safaris. They have a pop-up roof to allow you to stand and watch or capture the wildlife. This design also gives you the flexibility to move around the vehicle to get the best vantage point.
There will be a maximum of 6 guests in each truck, so you are always guaranteed a window seat.

All of the lodges and tented camps we have chosen provide a selection of both local and international cuisine. During our trip from Serengeti to Lake Natron, we will also stop at a local BBQ joint to experience local cuisine at its best.
We can cater for all dietary requirements. We will confirm any requirements both during the booking process and upon arrival to ensure your tastes and needs are catered for throughout the trip.

We always recommend visiting a physician before travelling to any new country, as they will be able to provide the best advice based on your own personal circumstances. However, if you are looking for general advice, then the Fit to Travel website is always a great resource.
It is worth noting that if you are transiting through a country that is at risk of yellow fever transmission, you need to show a Yellow Fever certificate. It is also worth noting that there is a risk of malaria in Tanzania, and therefore we recommend taking antimalarial tablets.

This Tanzania Safari Tour is designed for open-minded, adventurous travellers who are eager to go beyond the surface of a destination. It’s for those who crave meaningful, culturally immersive experiences – connecting local tribes, learning firsthand about human-wildlife conflict, and witnessing the awe of the Great Migration alongside hidden gems that few travellers ever see.
If you are someone who wants to be challenged -emotionally and intellectually- and leave with a deeper understanding of Tanzania, this journey is for you. It’s not just about ticking highlights off a list (although we do that too); it is about exploring with purpose, reflecting on your own beliefs, and embracing moments that could change the way you see the world.
If you are ready for a journey that goes beyond the ordinary, we’d love to have you join us!

We like our tours to be intimate, and for that reason, there will be no more than 12 guests on this tour and no more than 6 per vehicle to ensure everyone is comfortable.

Yes! There is so much to do in Tanzania that I would encourage you to stay longer! Whether you want to hike Kilimanjaro or relax on the beach in Zanzibar, we can always help you plan your extension.

No! Our trips attract predominantly solo travellers, so you will be in good company!
We will allocate rooms based on what we believe will be the best fit; however, once the tour is underway, there are usually very obvious friendships that are formed. Swapping roomies mid trip is never a problem.
And if you would like your own room, then you can always request this at an extra charge at the time of booking.

Tanzania has two distinct seasons: dry season and rainy season. September is still the dry season, and therefore, you can expect dry, sunny days with temperatures in the high 20s during the day. Mornings can be fresh, especially when we are at altitude, but the sun will soon warm up.
We recommend packing layers for the early morning game drives and a light raincoat just in case it does rain, although you would be very unlucky!

All the lodges apart from Osiligilai Maasai Lodge have WiFi, although it can be hit and miss as many are in very remote areas.
I would recommend getting data so that you can remain connected throughout the trip. You can either do this by buying a local SIM card in Arusha, or by pre-purchasing an eSIM so you are connected from the moment you land (this is my recommendation). Airalo and Firsty are my go-to choices.
